What can I do about bad breath?
Certain foods and beverages can cause bad breath. Strong foods, like onions and garlic, are temporary causes. Most bad breath is caused by poor oral hygiene. When eating, food debris gets stuck between your teeth and in the grooves of your tongue. This debris grows bacteria that releases a sulfur compound which causes bad breath. Dry mouth is also a common cause of bad breath. Dry mouth occurs naturally as you sleep and is also caused by some medications. And of course, tobacco is always a factor with bad breath.

Proper brushing and flossing is very important in helping bad breath. You should brush twice a day, floss at least once a day and use mouthwash capable of killing the bacteria in your mouth, like Listerine. Drink a lot of water throughout the day. You may also chew sugar-free gum or candies to help keep your breath fresh. If you have dentures, remember to remove them after eating and clean them well. And lastly, see your dentist twice a year.
